“The Arts Facing Gender Violence”

A seminar series organized by Marie Buscatto (Idhe.s, Univ. Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne – Cnrs); and Mathilde Provansal (Iris, Ehess-Cnrs, Ceet, Idhe.s).

It will take place online from November 2021 to February 2022, and it will end with a round-table organized live the 8th of March 2022 at the French ministry of Culture, in Paris. Two sessions are in English.

Since the Weinstein affair and the #MeToo movement, women and men have disclosed and denounced sexual and gendered violence in various artistic sectors (the film industry, opera, theater, the music industry, art schools, etc.). Breaking this silence has disturbed the image of artistic circles as open, tolerant and avant-gardist. While gender inequalities in art worlds are well documented by academic research, much less research has focused on gendered violence in the arts. This seminar series aims to develop a sociological analysis of gendered violence in artistic education and professions and explore the role of gender-based violence in the reproduction of the gender order in the arts. Our goal is to highlight the contexts, structures and power relations that enable gender-based violence in the arts, but also that allows it to be reproduced or, on the contrary, challenged and addressed. The analysis of the historical foundations and the social logics of gendered violence in the arts will allow its structural character to be emphasized against commonly-held psychologizing and individualizing explanations.
